The register of thesis positions at universities and research institutes abroad
ThesisAbroad

About us

Two theses abroad, two careers, one register.

ThesisAbroad was started by two graduates who wrote their master’s theses in research groups abroad and saw first-hand how much that opened up afterwards. We built the platform we wished we had when we were looking.

F

Francesco

Co-founder · now Robotics Software Engineer at a leading autonomous-systems company

Thesis abroad
Reinforcement learning for energy-aware robot locomotion
ETH Zürich, Robotic Systems Lab · Zürich, Switzerland · 2023
Home degree
MSc Automation and Control Engineering
Politecnico di Milano

Finding the thesis took longer than writing it. Months of emails to professors I had found on department websites, half of them never answered, the other half were full. The position I finally got came through a friend of a friend.

Six months in Zürich changed everything: the lab published my work, the supervisor wrote the reference that got me my first interviews, and the company that hired me had read the paper before I walked in.

“The thesis abroad was the single best decision of my degree. The only thing wrong with it was how hard it was to find.”
G

Giulia

Co-founder · now Senior Data Scientist at a global healthcare technology company

Thesis abroad
Causal inference for treatment effects in intensive care data
University of Copenhagen, Department of Public Health · Copenhagen, Denmark · 2022
Home degree
MSc Statistics and Data Science
University of Bologna

I applied to eleven research groups with eleven slightly different CVs and cover letters, tracked everything in a spreadsheet, and still lost a great option because an email landed in spam.

Copenhagen gave me a supervisor who treated me as a colleague, a co-authored paper, and a network that led straight to the job I have today. Every interview since has started with a question about that thesis.

“A thesis abroad is the most valuable line on a young graduate’s CV. We built ThesisAbroad so nobody has to find theirs by luck.”

What our theses taught us

  1. I.

A thesis abroad is a career accelerator

Both of us walked into our first job interviews with a published piece of research, a supervisor’s reference from a top group, and a story that set us apart from every other graduate.

  2. II.

Finding one should not depend on luck

We found ours through scattered department pages, unanswered emails and personal contacts. The best projects were often the hardest to discover, and great students missed them simply because nobody told them.

  3. III.

Supervisors want to be found, too

Research groups and companies lose weeks every year chasing candidates. A single register with verified supervisors, structured listings and one application profile saves time on both sides.

Trust and safety

Verified supervisors, your data under your control.

Researchers and companies are verified through their institutional email or by our moderation team. Positions from unverified accounts are reviewed before publication. Students decide who sees their profile, and documents are shared only with the supervisors they apply to.

Every position, profile and message has a report button that goes straight to our moderators. For anything else, write to hello@thesisabroad.example.
